WHY VOLUNTEER IN TANZANIA?
Tanzania is one of the oldest, continuously inhabited areas of the world. After a long period of colonial rule, in April 1964 the island of Zanzibar and mainland Tanganyika merged to form Tanzania. In the 1970's government systems underwent drastic changes and the economy began to decline. While great strides have been made and poverty has been reduced by half, still almost 30% of the population lives below the poverty line. Developing World Connections' long term commitment is to help improve the community members' life options and to increase their self-sufficiency.
Volunteer Participants work to support local host partner, Tuende Pamoja Charity in and around the village of Matipwilli. Volunteers will assist in the construction of a dispensary and home for the clinical officer. Currently medical assistance is 15 km away with no public transport between villages. Other anticipated projects may include building homes for teachers to attract and retain qualified teachers in the area and finishing a hostel for 75 local orphaned children.
Volunteer Abroad! In collaboration with our host-partners, efforts are focused on the creation of education opportunities, economic projects, healthcare, community and environmental awareness as a sustainable approach to poverty alleviation. No special skills are required. We invite people who cannot give the gift of time to donate to Tanzanian projects and programs through Developing World Connections. Visit the Donate page or contact us for more ways to be of service.
Upon completion of the Volunteer Experience, we recommend volunteers sample some of the best known places on Earth; the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and the island of Zanzibar. Hiking, enjoying the safari experience or relaxing on the beaches are must-do's if you visit Tanzania.
